Fraction P5 A002

Samuel spent 1/6 of his money and an additional of $5 on a CD. He then spent 2/5 of his remaining money and an additional $12 on some magazines. Given that he was left with $24, how much money did he have at first?

From the information given, you must know that you have to work backwards. You should also learn to solve without having to waste time drawing model.

3 u --> 24 + 12 = 36
1 u --> 36 ÷ 3 = 12              Where possible go straight to 5 u
5 u --> 5 x 12 = 60               5 u --> 5 ÷ 3 x 36 = 60

5/6 --> 60 + 5 = 65
6/6 --> 6 ÷ 5 x 65 = $78

Samuel had $78 at first.

Model for reference
       5/6 --> 60 + 5 = 65

      [ 5  ][   ][   ][   ][   ][   ]
<-- CD -->           [12][    24      ]
           <---- M ---->
                     3 u --> 24 +12 = 36
