Percentage P6 2010 SA2 Red Swastika P2 Q16

Kylie and Leonard have $4576 altogether. 1/8 of Leonard’s money is $38 more than 25% of Kylie’s money. (a) How much does Kylie have? (b) What fraction of Leonard’s money is Kylie’s money? (Express your answer in its simplest form.) [5 marks][Answer given: $1424, 89/197]

4 K + 8 L --> $4576

1 L --> K + $38
8 L --> 8 K + 8 x 38 = 8 K + 304

4 K + 8 K --> 4576 - 304
12 K --> 4272
4 K --> 4/12 x 4272 = $1424

a) It is $1424.

8 L --> 4576 - 1424 = $3152

1424/3152 = 89/197

b) It was 89/197.

A cashier had 181 pieces of $2 and $50 notes in her cash register. She took out 5/8 of the $50 notes and put in another eleven $2 notes. As a result, the number of the $2 notes was eight times the number of the $50 notes. What was the total value of her $2 and $50 notes in her cash register at first? [5 marks][Answer given: $2666]

     $2                       $50
-----------------------------
181 - 8 u                  8 u
+ 11                       - 5 u
-----------------------------
192 - 8 u                  3 u
    8              :            1
-----------------------------

192 - 8 u --> 8 x 3 u = 24 u
32 u --> 192
1 u --> 192/32 = 6

8 u --> 8 x 6 = 48

48 x 50 = $2400

181 - 48 = 133

133 x 2 = $266

2400 + 266 = $2666

It was $2666.

Volume P6 2010 SA2 Red Swastika P2 Q13

Shanna placed three empty tanks side by side as shown below. The smallest tank has a crack at the bottom of its side and the base area of each tank is 16 cm3. After she turned on the tap for 64 minutes, the height of the water in the smallest tank became 6 cm although 0.7 ml of water is leaking out of the crack per minute. Find the rate of flow of water from the tap. Give your answer in ml/min.

20 + 12 + 6 = 38

38 x 16 = 608

608/64 = 9.5

 9.5 + 0.7 = 10.2 ml/min

It was 10.2 ml/min.
